Why This Matters
Running out of psychiatric medication without a prescriber to continue it is one of the most common reasons patients reach out urgently. Causes include provider retirement, insurance network changes, relocation, practice closure, or simply the months-long wait that left a previous prescription uncovered. Sudden discontinuation of many psychiatric medications produces withdrawal effects, symptom return, or both — making medication continuity a clinical priority, not a convenience.
Bridge refill evaluations fit patients who were stable on their current regimen and need continuity. They do not fit patients who want refills without evaluation — federal and state regulations require a current prescriber relationship for ongoing prescriptions. For controlled substances specifically, an in-person evaluation may be required depending on current DEA guidance.
Common Concerns We See
Antidepressant discontinuation effects
Stopping SSRIs, SNRIs, and many other antidepressants abruptly can produce flu-like withdrawal, mood symptoms, and other discontinuation effects. Continuity matters.
Mood stabilizer interruption
Lithium, valproate, and other mood stabilizers carry significant relapse risk on abrupt discontinuation, particularly in bipolar disorder. Bridge evaluation is high priority.
Controlled substance regulations
Stimulants, benzodiazepines, and other Schedule II-IV medications carry strict federal prescribing rules. We can prescribe with established care — but for first-time controlled substance refills, an in-person evaluation may be required.
Records continuity matters
Coordination with your previous prescriber for records review makes the bridge evaluation efficient and clinically sound. We coordinate records requests on your behalf.
How This Works
Call our intake team. Have your current medication list ready: drug names, doses, frequencies, and how long you have been on each. We schedule a continuity-of-care evaluation within the week (often within 1-3 days), confirm your regimen, and continue prescribing. For controlled substances, federal regulations require a current relationship with the prescribing provider — we discuss this specifically at intake.
Clinical Perspective
A common scenario in our practice: a patient who was stable on antidepressant medication for years, whose previous psychiatrist retired or closed practice, and who is now 1-3 weeks from running out. Bridge evaluation scheduled within the week confirms the regimen, addresses any current questions, and continues the prescription. We typically obtain records from the previous prescriber by the time of the visit so the evaluation focuses on continuity rather than rebuilding history from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you just call in a refill without seeing me?
No. Texas and federal regulations require an established prescriber-patient relationship for psychiatric prescriptions. The fastest way to continuity is a same-week evaluation visit, after which prescribing can continue.
What about controlled substances — stimulants, benzodiazepines?
Controlled substances are tightly regulated under federal law. We can prescribe to established patients but may require an in-person evaluation for new patients depending on current DEA guidance. Telepsychiatry alone may not be sufficient for first-time controlled substance prescriptions.
How quickly can you see me for a bridge refill?
Typically within 1-7 business days. Bridge refill situations are prioritized in our scheduling, particularly when records can be confirmed in advance.
What records do you need?
Your current medication list (names, doses, frequencies), the name and contact info for your previous prescriber, and any recent psychiatric evaluation notes. Our intake team can coordinate records requests if you authorize it.
Will the bridge evaluation cost more than a standard visit?
No. Bridge evaluations are billed as standard new-patient psychiatric evaluations. Insurance covers them at standard rates; self-pay rates apply otherwise.
What if I've been off medication for a while already?
We can still help. Restart situations require careful clinical evaluation — we discuss whether to resume the same regimen, restart at lower doses, or revisit the regimen entirely. Same-week evaluation typical.
