Psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychotherapy are qualifying medical expenses under IRS rules for HSAs and FSAs. You can pay for your visit with your HSA or FSA card directly, or pay with a regular card and reimburse yourself from your HSA/FSA later.
What You'll Pay
Whether you're using insurance, self-pay, or out-of-network reimbursement, your HSA or FSA can pay your portion. Specialist copays, coinsurance, deductible spending, and self-pay rates are all HSA/FSA-eligible. We accept HSA and FSA cards as payment at the time of service.

How It Works
At the time of service, you pay with your HSA or FSA card the same way you'd pay with any other card. We process the charge and email you an itemized receipt. If your HSA/FSA administrator requests documentation (some require it for substantiation), the itemized receipt is what they need.
When This Makes Sense
You have an HSA-eligible high-deductible plan
HSA balances roll over year to year. Using HSA funds for psychiatric care is tax-advantaged and doesn't expire like FSA funds.
You have an FSA that expires
FSA funds typically expire at year-end (with limited carryover). Using FSA funds for psychiatric care prevents losing the balance.
You want pre-tax payment
HSA and FSA contributions come out of your paycheck before taxes. Using these funds for medical care is effectively a 20-30% discount on your visit fees.
You're combining payment methods
You can use HSA/FSA for the patient portion (copay, coinsurance, deductible) while insurance covers the rest, or pay 100% via HSA/FSA for self-pay visits.

Some administrators require substantiation for medical expenses. The itemized receipt we email you contains the date of service, CPT procedure codes, and amount paid — typically everything they need. If they need additional documentation, contact us and we'll provide what they request.
Can I use HSA/FSA for telepsychiatry visits?
Yes. Telepsychiatry is HSA- and FSA-eligible the same as in-person visits.
Can I use HSA/FSA for medications?
Yes. Prescription psychiatric medications are HSA- and FSA-eligible. Pay at the pharmacy with your HSA/FSA card.
What about HSA/FSA for OON visits or superbill reimbursement?
HSA/FSA funds can pay your portion at the time of service. If your insurance later reimburses you for the visit, you'd repay your HSA/FSA from that reimbursement to avoid double-dipping (which would create a tax issue). Most administrators have simple processes for this.
Can family members use my HSA for their psychiatric care?
Generally yes. HSA funds can pay for qualifying medical expenses of you, your spouse, and your tax dependents. Check IRS Publication 969 for specifics.
