Why This Matters for College Students
College and graduate students face mental health presentations that often emerge for the first time during the transition to independent life and academic demands. ADHD that was compensated through high school becomes impairing when external structure disappears. Anxiety and depression peak in the late teens and early 20s. Substance use experimentation can develop into use disorders. Campus counseling centers help with short-term needs; complex or medication-based care often benefits from continuing psychiatric care.
Common Concerns We See
Students typically come to us for:
ADHD that became impairing in college
Many students with previously-compensated ADHD struggle when the external structure of high school disappears. Evaluation distinguishes ADHD from anxiety, depression, and substance-related concentration problems. Stimulant medication, when indicated, requires specific safety considerations in college populations.
Anxiety that's affecting academic function
Test anxiety, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder all peak during college years. Treatment combines medication, therapy referrals, and coordination with disability services for academic accommodations when appropriate.
Depression that started in college
First-episode depression often emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood. Treatment combines medication and therapy referrals; severity determines the order and emphasis.
Academic accommodation documentation
We provide diagnostic documentation for disability services when clinically indicated. Coordination with your campus's disability office is feasible with your written consent.
How We Work with College Students
Our approach is structured around what college students actually need: confidential, evidence-based care; appointment availability that fits real schedules; and treatment that addresses the specific stressors and presentations common in your context.
Clinical Perspective
A common scenario in our practice: a college student in their first or second year who succeeded in high school through tight parental structure and is now struggling academically. The presenting concern is often labeled 'just anxiety' or 'adjustment problems.' On evaluation, ADHD becomes apparent — masked through high school by structure, exposed by the unstructured college environment. Treatment combines medication, accommodations coordination, and skill-building therapy.
Conditions We Treat for College Students

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you treat students at colleges across Texas?
Yes. Texas telepsychiatry means we can see students at any college or university in the state. Most appointments are by secure video; the Tyler clinic is available for students local to East Texas.
Will my parents find out about my treatment?
If you're 18 or older, psychiatric care is confidential under HIPAA — your parents are not notified unless you specifically authorize it. If you're under 18, parental involvement is required by law.
Can you help with academic accommodations?
Yes, when clinically indicated. We provide diagnostic documentation that you can submit to your campus disability services office. We do not write blanket accommodation letters without evaluation — accommodations need a clinical basis.
Do you prescribe stimulants for ADHD?
Yes, when ADHD is clinically diagnosed and stimulants are the appropriate treatment. Stimulant prescription in college populations has specific safety considerations — we discuss diversion risks, substance use screening, and monitoring requirements transparently at intake.
Does my parents' insurance cover this?
If you're on a parent's insurance plan, yes — we accept most major insurance. The insurer's EOB may go to the policyholder (your parent). Self-pay avoids this entirely.
What about summer break — can I still see you?
Yes. Telepsychiatry covers any location in Texas regardless of where school is. Out-of-state summer locations require attention to interstate licensing — we coordinate temporary continuity plans when this applies.
