Same-Day Psychiatric Evaluation | East Texas Psychiatry & Counseling
Same-day and next-day psychiatric evaluations across Texas — by secure telepsychiatry or in person at our Tyler clinic. Subject to provider availability.
Board-certified PMHNPs. Most patients seen within a week. 90-minute first appointment. Same provider every visit. Statewide telepsychiatry from our Tyler clinic.
Why This Matters
Same-day psychiatric care is often the difference between starting effective treatment now and a months-long wait that lets symptoms worsen. We hold a limited number of same-day and next-day evaluation slots each week for patients whose situation warrants accelerated scheduling. Most patients who don't need same-day are still seen within 5-7 business days of intake. We do not maintain months-long waitlists.
Same-day evaluation makes sense for patients who have lost access to a previous prescriber, patients whose symptoms have meaningfully worsened, and patients on months-long waitlists with other providers. It does not replace emergency care for active suicidal crisis — that requires 988, 911, or your nearest emergency department.
Common Concerns We See
Medication continuity needs
Running out of medication is one of the most common reasons patients need same-day care. We prioritize continuity-of-care evaluations when records can be obtained quickly.
Symptoms worsening this week
When depression, anxiety, or other symptoms escalate beyond what feels manageable, waiting weeks for an opening is often the wrong call. Same-day evaluation accelerates the treatment timeline.
Loss of previous provider
Provider retirement, insurance network changes, or relocation can leave patients without care suddenly. Same-day intake addresses this directly.
Waitlist limbo elsewhere
Patients on 6-12 week waitlists with hospital-system psychiatry often qualify for our same-day slots, especially when their primary care provider supports the referral.
How This Works
Call our intake team. If same-day or next-day slots are open, we schedule immediately and verify insurance or self-pay rates by phone. If no same-day slots are available, we offer the next earliest opening — usually within the same week. If our schedule is full, we tell you directly and help identify alternatives, including coordination with your primary care provider for bridge prescriptions where clinically appropriate.
Clinical Perspective
A common scenario in our practice: a patient whose previous psychiatrist closed their practice or stopped accepting their insurance, leaving them with 2-4 weeks of medication and no provider for continuity. Same-day or next-day evaluation prevents the medication gap. We coordinate with the previous prescriber for records, confirm the current regimen, and continue treatment without interruption.
Related Conditions We Treat
Our psychiatric services cover the full range of adult mental health conditions, with particular relevance for this situation:
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really get a psychiatric evaluation today?
Sometimes. We hold a limited number of same-day and next-day slots each week for patients whose situation warrants it. Call our intake team to check current availability. If same-day is not possible, we offer the next earliest opening, typically within the week.
What if I'm in psychiatric crisis right now?
This page describes scheduled outpatient psychiatric care, not crisis services. If you are in immediate danger to yourself or others, call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency department. Outpatient care is appropriate after acute crisis stabilization.
What's included in the same-day evaluation?
The same 90-minute comprehensive psychiatric evaluation we provide every new patient: complete history, symptom assessment, medication review, treatment plan, and prescribing when clinically appropriate. Same-day timing does not mean reduced thoroughness.
Can my primary care doctor refer me for same-day?
Yes. Primary care referrals often help expedite same-day or next-day intake, especially when the PCP has been managing your psychiatric medications and is now requesting psychiatric handoff for continuity of care.
Will insurance cover a same-day evaluation?
Same-day evaluations are billed the same as scheduled evaluations. Coverage depends on your plan. Our intake team verifies insurance and confirms costs before scheduling.
What if I can't be seen today and I'm worried about waiting?
Tell us specifically what is happening. We may be able to coordinate with your primary care provider for a bridge prescription, suggest an alternative provider in the area, or identify whether your situation warrants urgent or emergency care rather than outpatient scheduling.
