Urgent Psychiatric Care | East Texas Psychiatry & Counseling
Urgent outpatient psychiatric care for time-sensitive presentations — by secure telepsychiatry across Texas or in person at our Tyler clinic.
Board-certified PMHNPs. Most patients seen within a week. 90-minute first appointment. Same provider every visit. Statewide telepsychiatry from our Tyler clinic.
Why This Matters
Urgent psychiatric care addresses situations that warrant faster scheduling than the typical 5-7 business days but do not require emergency department evaluation. Common urgent presentations include rapid symptom worsening, medication crises, postpartum decompensation that has not crossed into crisis, and care transitions following hospital discharge. We allocate urgent slots based on clinical need.
Urgent outpatient care is appropriate when symptoms are escalating but you are safe and not in immediate danger to yourself or others. It is not a substitute for crisis services. If you are experiencing active suicidal ideation with intent, severe agitation, psychosis with safety concerns, or any symptom that feels emergent, the right resources are 988, 911, or your nearest emergency department — not scheduled outpatient care.
Common Concerns We See
Post-hospitalization handoff
Discharge from a psychiatric inpatient unit warrants follow-up within 7 days. Long waitlists elsewhere create a known risk window — urgent outpatient scheduling closes the gap.
Medication adjustment urgency
New medication side effects, breakthrough symptoms on stable regimens, or pregnancy-related medication questions all benefit from prompt clinical input rather than waiting weeks.
Postpartum decompensation
Postpartum mood and anxiety symptoms can escalate quickly. Urgent evaluation matters when symptoms are worsening but the patient is safe and not in active crisis.
Care transition from another state
Patients moving to Texas with active psychiatric treatment need continuity-of-care evaluation promptly — particularly for controlled substances that cannot be filled without a current local prescriber.
How This Works
Call our intake team and describe what is happening. We triage by phone — most callers reach a clinical staff member within minutes during business hours. If your situation fits urgent outpatient care, we schedule you within 24-72 hours typically. If your situation requires emergency department evaluation, we tell you that directly and help you understand why.
Clinical Perspective
A common scenario in our practice: a patient discharged from a hospital psychiatric unit who needs outpatient follow-up within 7 days but has been told their first available psychiatric appointment is in 6 weeks. The gap between hospital discharge and outpatient pickup is a known risk period. Urgent scheduling closes that gap, with discharge-paperwork-based coordination and prescription continuity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is urgent care different from same-day?
Same-day means seen the same calendar day if slots allow. Urgent means seen within 24-72 hours — faster than the typical 5-7 day intake but not necessarily today. Both are outpatient evaluation; neither is emergency or crisis service.
When should I go to the ER instead?
If you are in immediate danger to yourself or others, experiencing active suicidal ideation with intent, severe agitation, or psychosis with safety concerns — go to the ER or call 911. Outpatient psychiatry, even urgent outpatient psychiatry, is not designed for active crisis.
Can you see me within 24-72 hours by telepsychiatry?
Often yes, depending on slot availability and the nature of your situation. Telepsychiatry urgent appointments are typically faster to schedule than in-person.
What about prescription refills only?
Refill-only situations may not require full urgent evaluation — sometimes a brief continuity-of-care visit suffices. Tell us the specifics at intake; we triage accordingly.
Will insurance cover urgent care visits?
Urgent psychiatric outpatient visits are billed as standard psychiatric services — coverage matches your plan's specialist or behavioral health benefit. We verify before scheduling.
Can I schedule urgent care for a family member?
Family members can call to inquire about availability, but the actual scheduling and clinical conversation must include the patient (who must be 18+). We do not schedule urgent psychiatric care for adult patients without their direct involvement.
